Moving home often marks the start of an exciting new chapter – but it can also be one of life’s most stressful experiences. Boxes, deadlines, paperwork and endless to-do lists can easily take over, leaving you exhausted and short on sleep. The good news is that with the right planning, you can make your move smooth and manageable. Here’s how to stay calm, organised and well-rested throughout the process.

Start early – and make a realistic plan

The key to a stress-free move is to start well in advance. Many people underestimate how long it takes to sort, pack and coordinate everything. Create a timeline that spans several weeks and break tasks into smaller, achievable steps.

  • 6–8 weeks before moving: Go through your belongings and decide what to keep, sell, donate or recycle. Get quotes from removal companies or book a van if you’re moving yourself.
  • 3–4 weeks before: Begin packing items you don’t use daily – books, seasonal clothes, decorations and spare bedding.
  • 1 week before: Pack up the kitchen and bathroom, and prepare a “first night” box with essentials.
  • Moving day: Have a clear plan for who does what, and make sure there’s food, water and time for breaks.

A structured plan helps you stay in control and prevents last-minute panic.

Declutter before you pack

A move is the perfect opportunity to lighten your load. The less you take with you, the easier and cheaper the move will be – and the quicker you’ll settle into your new home.

Work room by room and ask yourself whether you really need each item. Clothes you haven’t worn in years, old paperwork and duplicate kitchen gadgets can often be donated or sold online. Starting fresh in a clutter-free space feels liberating – both physically and mentally.

Pack smart – and protect your sleep

Packing can easily drag on late into the night, but lack of sleep only makes you more stressed and less efficient. Set clear boundaries for when you’ll pack and when you’ll rest.

A few simple tricks can make packing easier:

  • Use small boxes for heavy items like books and larger boxes for lighter things.
  • Label every box clearly with its contents and destination room.
  • Prepare an essentials box with toiletries, bedding, chargers, snacks and clothes for a couple of days.
  • Make sure your bed is the first thing you set up in the new home – you’ll thank yourself when it’s time to sleep.

Get help – you don’t have to do it all yourself

Trying to handle every part of a move alone can be overwhelming. Think about where you can get help – from professionals or from friends and family.

A removal company can take care of the heavy lifting and transport, leaving you free to focus on packing and organising. If friends are helping, plan the day carefully and provide food, drinks and a friendly atmosphere. Teamwork makes the day go faster – and often more enjoyable.

Don’t forget the practical details

Beyond the boxes and furniture, there are plenty of administrative tasks to remember. A checklist will help you stay on top of things:

  • Register your change of address with Royal Mail and update your details with your GP, bank, insurance and subscriptions.
  • Take meter readings for gas, electricity and water at both properties.
  • Arrange broadband installation and any council services such as waste collection in advance.
  • Notify your employer and local council if necessary.

Sorting these details early prevents unpleasant surprises later.

Give yourself time to settle in

Even after the boxes are unpacked, it can take time to feel truly at home. Allow yourself to settle in gradually – you don’t need everything perfect in the first week. Explore your new neighbourhood, find your local shops and parks, and make the space your own bit by bit.

Moving isn’t just a logistical task – it’s also an emotional transition. With thoughtful planning, realistic expectations and a few good nights’ sleep, you can turn your move into a positive and refreshing new beginning.
